CRANBERRY TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A 63-year-old Seneca woman lost $3000 after falling victim to an online scam, according to Franklin-based police.
According to police, the actor(s) posed as a 63-year-old Seneca woman’s friend on Facebook, sending her messages, in which her friend’s photo came up.
While doing this, the actor(s) told the victim, through the messenger, that her friend had won $50,000 and that her name was on the winning ticket as well.
This led the victim to click a link to see what she had won and she was congratulated for winning $200,000 and a brand new Nissan Truck, police say.
The scammers claimed the winnings were part of a “Facebook Tenth Anniversary Lottery” being held conjunction with the “International Monetary Fund.”
The actor(s) eventually convinced the victim to wire $2,000, followed by another $1,000, for taxes and fees in order for her prize to be delivered to her home, before realizing she had been scammed and refused to send additional money, according to police.
