WHEELING, W. Va. - Balance was the key for the Clarion University women’s volleyball team in an opening round 3-0 win over Seton Hill in NCAA Division II Playoffs Atlantic Region Thursday afternoon at Wheeling Jesuit.
Five Golden Eagles had between six and 14 kills helping Clarion to the win with set victories of 25-19, 30-28 and 25-21.
“We have five hitters on the court and some off the court (reserves) who can put the ball away,” Clarion’s seventh-year head coach Jennifer Mills said. “When we are firing on all cylinders and taking care of the ball we can get everyone involved.”
Carlie Bieranowski led Clarion (32-4), which tied the school record for victories in a season with 32, with 14 kills, seven digs and a block. Corinne Manley added 10 kills, two digs and two blocks while hitting .375 (10 kills, 1 error, 24 attempts), while Hannah Heeter chipped in with eight kills, six blocks and a dig and hit .261 (8-2-23).
“Once we settled in, we got every hitter involved,” junior setter Laura Subject, who had 38 set assists and 13 digs, said. “We were able to get points all across the net, and that’s what helped us win.”
Emily Stewart added six kills and 13 digs with Kelly Shannon also recording six kills to go with five blocks. Morgan Seybold led Clarion’s defense with 16 digs, while Lauren Magalski added 10 digs.
“I take my hat off to Clarion,” Seton Hill coach Rick Hall said. “They played a great game.”
Despite the 3-0 score, all three sets were tight with the second set being the tightest as each team had chances to put the set away before Clarion scored the sets final three points to get the victory and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
“I think despite the 3-0 score, they played so much better then they did against us in the regular season (a pair of Clarion wins),” Mills said. “We had to work to score points today. I was impressed with Seton Hill.”
In the pivotal second set, neither team led by more than two with Clarion’s biggest lead coming at two a few times, the latest at 20-18, and Seton Hill’s largest advantage being one point.
The Griffins (26-12) had the first opportunity to put the set away leading 24-23 after a service error by Megan Condi, but Heeter delivered a kill to tie the set at 24.
Errors by each team – first by Clarion then by Seton Hill – tied at 25 before Corrine Gahagen, who led Seton Hill with 13 kills and two blocks while hitting .367 (13-2-30) came up with a kill to give the Griffins their third set point of the set, 26-25.
But another Seton Hill error tied the set at 27 before Gahagen got another kill to put the Griffins back ahead 27-26.
But Manley rose to the challenge with a kill to make it 27-all, and Bieranowski gave the Golden Eagles their first set point of the set with a kill to make it 28-27.
But this time, a ball-handling error on Subject tied the set at 28.
It was Manley again putting Clarion up 29-28 before Shannon, a freshman, ended the set with a kill giving the Golden Eagles the 2-0 lead.
“There were a couple of pivotal moments in the first and second set, especially in the second when we had a couple of chances to take the set and we couldn’t close the deal,” Hall said.
Seton Hill started the match strong taking an early 12-7 lead in the first set before a Clarion timeout seemed to settle the Golden Eagles down. Clarion took the next seven points with Manley recording an ace and Shannon and Bieranowski kills, and the Golden Eagles never relinquished the lead in the set.
“The message (during the timeout) was the same as it always is,” Mills said. “We needed to be a little more aggressive, have a little more ball control. I think nerves were playing a role, being back here (at the NCAA Tournament). Once we settled down, we were fine.”
In the third set, Clarion trailed 11-8 before a 7-2 run gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Shannon had a pair of kills during the spurt, while Bieranowski, Heeter and Stewart also recorded kills.
Cassie Hauseld added seven kills and 17 digs for Seton Hill, while Courtney Field had 33 set assists. Lauren Teed finished with 15 digs and Katie Bloomgren added 14.
“We also served well, and that helped keep them out of system,” Mills said.
The Golden Eagles will take on California (Pa.), a 3-0 winner over Gannon in the first round, in the Round of 32, the regional semifinals, at 5 p.m. Friday at Wheeling Jesuit. The Golden Eagles and Vulcans split their regular-season matches with both teams getting 3-2 wins on their home court.
“They are a good team,” Subject said. “We split in the regular season, so this is the tier breaker. We know them well.”
